Gun control

The Washington Post

April 16th, 2012

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/romney-to-try-to-reassure-nra-that-he-will-aggressively-defend-gun-rights/2012/04/13/gIQArrKCFT_story.html

Summary:

In an attempt to win supporters from NRA, the National Rifle Association, Mitt Romney, G.O.P presidential contestant is explicitly stating that he will be defending the rights of gun-owners. By explicitly stating that he will be reducing laws that hassle gun-owners, Romney is making it clear that he wants to distinguish himself from Obama, who he states to encumber gun-owners with regulations.

Connection:

The National Rifle Association, an interest group with a high number of members had traditionally been a supporter of Republican candidates, who have in the past singularly expressed to reduce the barriers to gun-ownership and rights. By appealing to the NRA as a ardent defendant of gun-ownership, Romney hopes to increase his popularity with NRA's members and traditional Republican voters.

Reflection:

The NRA's influence in politics is significant, as can been seen with the passage of the “Stand Your Ground” act in so many states, which permits gun-owners to defend themselves when threatened in public. Romney, by emphasizing his loyalty to rifle and gun owners is attempting to secure their votes. However, perhaps even without his speech, they will most likely be inclined to vote for him because of the Democratic party's history of imposing gun regulations.

Environment

The New York Times

May 24th, 2012

http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2011/08/24/what-if-republicans-closed-the-epa

Summary:

The Environmental Protection Agency that was commissioned by President Nixon of the Republican party in the 1970s is now being attacked by the current members of the Republican party. From the more extreme conservatives including Michelle Bachmann to former and current G.O.P presidential candidates, Rick Perry, and Newt Gingrich, everyone is aiming to get rid of the EPA for good. Condemning the EPA as setting up additional barriers to job creation, EPA's multitudes of regulations on businesses is cited as it main fault.

Connection:

The Republican party is notorious for its long term condemnation of EPA and approbation of oil companies. During the Bush Jr. presidency, the administration's placement of a former oil company worker as the director of the EPA portrays of the conflicts in the interest between oil and EPA. However, the fact that the EPA was not dissembled by the Bush presidency shows one thing-that EPA is mostly likely here to stay.

Reflection:

It is surprising given the fact that current Republicans are so averse to the EPA that a Republican president was responsible for its creation. While the current Republicans are busy condemning the EPA for obstructing job creation, they have ignored its role in serving to maintain the health of Americans. Without the EPA to regulate oil and automobile industries, the subsequent increase in carbon dioxide emissions would probably contribute to more job losses through exacerbating global warming.

Foreign Policy

The Washington Post

May 25th, 2012

David Ignatius

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/in-foreign-policy-obama-learns-on-the-job/2012/05/10/gIQAHSJ4FU_story.html

Summary:

On topics regarding foreign policy, Obama has become more and more comfortable and eloquent. The crown of his foreign policy record, the bagging of Osama bin Laden, will be instrumental for Obama as he will be highlighting his monumental achievement in comparison to Romney's inexperience. Coming ahead, Obama finds that another discussion with the Iranian government regarding nuclear weapons will be necessary, as will the cooperation with Russia on the Syrian government. Furthermore, in opposition to Romney's proposal for a trade war with China, Obama proposes that establishing a good relationship with China will be necessary as China experiences a leadership transition.

Connection:

While presidents may have achieved great successes with matters concerning foreign policy, it is their performance pertaining to matters on the domestic front that usually inspires victory at the ballot. However, the capture of Osama bin Laden is also a success that will resonate with Americans who have long associated him with the horrors of 9/11. Thus, Obama's success with foreign policy will likely aid him gain favor with voters.

Reflection:

Obama's record on foreign policy will be really hard for Romney, a novice, to match. Thus, in order to compensate for his lack of experience and success with foreign relations, Romney must strengthen his domestic policies such as boosting the economy, reducing the national debt, etc. If he follows the lead of Francois Hollande is focusing on the needs of the native people first, perhaps he will stand a chance against Obama.

Elections/Campaigns

The Washington Post

May 25th, 2012

John Cohen

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/romney-holds-key-advantages-among-financially-struggling-white-voters/2012/05/24/gJQACxPgoU_story.html

Summary:

Polls are showing that Mitt Romney, the Republican party forerunner is enjoying a greater support from White voters, especially those who are struggling financially. Winning 58% to Obama's 32%, Romney is gaining more support from mostly unemployed White voters, especially those without higher education. While Obama enjoys more support from non-White voters, this group of low-income White voters have the potential to hurt him in the race.

Connection:

The Republican party, which has generally enjoyed support from the richest, social conservatives and the less-educated is retaining the vote from the financially struggling White voters. The majority in this group of voters have less-educated, and are thus currently unable to find jobs with low skills. This group's support might prove to be key in helping Romney defeat Obama, who while possessing support from non-Whites, will have to struggle to win.

Reflection:

The Democratic party have always lagged in support from White voters without college degrees. Not having college degrees usually translates to low-skill labor, and with the high rate of unemployment, possibly has caused those voters to be inclined toward a new face in the White House. Because Obama has yet to officially start advertising against Romney, the current figures might experience a shift afterwards.

Political Parties

The Washington Post

April 26th, 2012

Aaron Blake

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/post/the-republican-partys-catholic-cadrecoming-soon/2012/04/26/gIQAB2rRjT_blog.html

Summary:

The Republican party, as seen in the recent campaigns, seems to be gaining a resurgence in the support of Catholics. Firstly, this year's G.O.P contenders, such as Newt Gringich and Rick Santorum as well a handful of representatives and senators are Catholic. This increase in number in candidates also corresponds to an increase in Catholic voters, which has been increasing their pledge to the Republican party.

Connection:

When Kennedy was elected as president, his Catholic faith made him the target for people fearing rule by the Pope and the overlap of church and state. However, his election also marks as a shift in Catholic voter behavior and increasingly, Catholic voters have been voting Republican. The Catholic faith of candidates has greatly evolved since then, from a taboo to being unremarkable.

Reflection:

While Mitt Romney has been highlighted by his Mormon faith, Mormonism by far overshadowed by the Catholicism of the numerous candidates this year. Perhaps a reflection of greater allegiance from Catholic voters, the Catholic faith of the candidates have become much more accepted than Mormonism. With the Republican focus on social conservatism on matters such as same-gender marriage and abortion, the Republican party will likely witness an surge in support from Catholic voters this year.

Social Security

The Washington Post

May 25th, 2012

Summary:

In a release, the Social Security trustees have published data regarding the beneficiaries of social security, the deficits and its budget allotments. In a table, it is shown that for the majority of elderlies, social security constitutes as more than 50% of their income whereas for the remaining recipients, social security constitutes as more than 75% to 100% of their income. The Hispanic and African American elderly are noted for having a greater percentage that is reliant upon the social security aid for the majority of their income.

Connection:

The majority of elderly Americans benefit from social security, thus, its increase or decrease is so closely tied to support or lack thereof from elderly voters. Because for the majority of elderly Americans, social security constitutes as a significant or even only source of income, it is understandable why senior voters are so sensitive to issues surrounding social security.

Reflection:

The senior voting population is not a force to be reckoned with as precedents have shown that programs that attempt to decrease or eliminate social security has been met with backlashes in the voting booths. As the data shows, social security is such an important issue because it is instrumental supplying elderly Americans with the necessary finances to live. Among the African-American and Hispanic-American seniors, social security is even more important to their ability to afford daily expenses and thus, they will likely to respond most quickly to social security cuts.

Federal Budget

The New York Times

April 13th, 2012

Jonathan Weisman

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/14/us/politics/house-republicans-to-tackle-federal-budget.html

Summary:

Republicans from the House of Representatives have gathered to draft an appropriations bill that proposed to slash government spending especially in entitlement programs by nearly 3 trillion. Of the cuts, discretionary spending, agriculture, and entitlement programs will be the most heavily targeted. While many remain skeptical of whether these cuts will actually occur and if so, what their repercussions will be, former Bush economist, the current spokesman for the Ways and Means committee shows confidence in their plans.

Connection:

One of the biggest problems that has plagued consecutive president is the issue of budget deficit. Currently with the continuously increasing debt of the government, cutting spending has been the answers. However, usually, cutting spending also means less aid for the people who need it the most, such as recipients of Medicaid and Medicare.

Reflection

While Democratic politicians are characterized by their inclination to increase federal spending, supporting a larger government, Republican politicians have always advocated the opposite, for a smaller budget and smaller government. However, both approaches have their pros and cons. For example, while cutting unnecessary spending and thus helping to reduce federal deficit seems to be for a good cause, cutting spending also means reducing the quality of education and health care that many need.

Economy

The New York Times

April 29th, 2012

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/30/opinion/the-economy-downshifts.html#

Summary:

Compared to the rest of the world, specifically the European markets recently, U.S is faring relatively well. However, still suffering from the aftereffects of the recession such as unemployment, the 2.2% economic growth signals that the growth has yet to be able to restore the damages caused by the recession. Thus, given the still-weak economy, people should not be too optimistic about future growths.

Connection:

For the majority of the Obama's 1st term as president, the economy has been the top priority. Across America, the financial crisis caused by the recession, including unemployment, bankruptcies and foreclosures made daily headlines. However, as the economic growth gradually recovered, so did the approval rating for Obama, showing how a presiden'ts performance is so closely tied to the economic factors.

Reflection:

It's the economy, stupid”, Clinton's catchphrase as he was running for president has stuck, as it has been shown how closely people link economic prosperity to presidential performance. Obama, who has witnessed the nation at the lowest points of the recession and now its recovery, has been credited with aiding its growth. For the former French president, Nicholas Sarkozy, who has been viewed to have neglected the economic problems at the domestic front, things have not been so lucky as his opponent, Francois Hollande, who like Clinton realized “c'est l'economie, stupide”, won the presidential election.

Health Care

The New York Times

May 25th, 2012

Dennis Rosen

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/16/opinion/when-competitive-bidding-hurts-patients.html?scp=10&sq=health%20care&st=Search

Summary:

The Obama administration has recently released a statement regarding the adoption of more competitive bidding for Medicare, which will start being applied to Medicaid and other health programs if it successfully reduces costs. However, the author warns, although the usage of competitive bidding may reduce the cost of equipment, it does not ensure a better service. Because many equipments require extensive explanation about its usage, companies send out technicians to explain to family about how to operate. However, with competitive bidding, the lowest bidder, who may offer the same equipment at a lower price, may also have worse in terms of technician service.

Connection:

When Obama had first entered the White House, one of his first priorities was to create a nationalized health care program. Although that has repeatedly failed, he has not surrendered his efforts. Mainly critized for its costs, of the reasons Obamacare had been unpopular with so many was due to the high costs involved. By adopting a competitive bidding system, Obama is attempting to lower the costs of health care and possibly pave way for his future plans.

Reflection:

It is not the first time competitive bidding has been used by the government to lower costs. For instance, many local and state governments hire the lowest bidder to construct roads, schools, and parks. Although this helps to eliminate many of the costs involved with the inefficiency of the government, competitive bidding has also led to problems regarding accountability.

Taxes

The New York Times
May 25th, 2012
David Kosienciewski http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/03/business/economy/03rates.html

Summary: U.S is quickly reaching world's number one for having the highest corporate taxes. Second only to Japan, the corporate tax in U.S is at a whopping 35% and thus have caused many corporations to argue for a lower tax. However, despite the high tax rate, many companies have found loopholes that allows them to pay significantly less. For instance, Honeywell for the past year, was found to have only paid 15% of its total revenue.

Connection: Corporate taxes are a critical component for supplying U.S' federal budget. However, in recent years, the government has plummeted into even greater dept. Its culprit is perhaps the corporations that hire specialists that help them to find loopholes that significantly reduces the amount they have to pay. As shown by the companies that are paying much less, the loopholes must be eliminated in order for the government to suffer less losses. However, the fact that so much companies are seeking loopholes show that the system must be reconfigured to make U.S corporations an equal playing field with companies of other countries, which are paying significantly less in taxes.

Reflection: As Warren Buffet points out, despite being one of the richest persons in the world, he pays less taxes than the average middle class salaryman. The reason for his ability to pay such low taxes-loopholes in the tax system- are exactly what corporates are employing to pay less. Thus, the fact that the rich are paying such low taxes should be a signal that the current tax system must be revised.

Gun control

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/22/opinion/shot-to-death-in-florida.html?scp=7&sq=gun%20control&st=cse

Summary
Waiving the “duty to retreat” for shooters who has reasonable belief that their livelihood is harmed, Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law has incited national outrage by giving shooters the claim of self-defense. Recently, during the trial for the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a teenager who was shot because George Zimmerman felt threatened, the judges ruled the shootings justifiable on the basis that Zimmerman was standing his ground to defend himself. Florida was the first to pass such laws in 2005, backed by heavy National Rifle Association and support from Republican governor, Jeb Bush.

Connection
When coupling the National Rifle Association, a large interest group of gun-lovers, with Republicans, who have long defended the second amendment, the right to bear arms, the result is the “Stand Your Ground” law. In the past, people who felt threatened are always encouraged to first retreat and then use force if the offender instigates violence, but with the “Stand Your Ground” law, it allows anyone with reasonable suspicion of endangerment to employ violent force. With national attention brought to this law, it seems that its constitutionality might inevitably be judged.

Reflection

The Zimmerman case, inciting national outrage over the “Stand Your Ground” law, will most likely bring the issue to the forefront of the presidential election. While both President Obama and Republican candidates have condemned Zimmerman, it is uncertain yet the exact position of the Republican candidates regarding “Stand Your Ground”. For the present-being, the Republican candidates are more focused on separating themselves from the man that many citizens are condemning, but whether or not they agree with the law itself, will be interesting to see.

Environment

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/22/business/energy-environment/a-clash-over-mining-and-water.html?scp=7&sq=environment&st=cse
Summary
Rosemont Copper, a copper mining company that proposed a project to dig a copper mine in southern Arizona has been faced with adversaries varying from local residents, businesses, farmers, and the E.P.A. Though Arizona already supplies the majority of U.S’ copper resources, Rosement Copper’s new operation aimed to further increase that amount. However, local residents are protesting its operation, fearing that the water-intensive operations will exacerbate the already low water supplies. Furthermore, the copper operation has been criticized as residents fear that the toxins from the mining process will contaminate water resources.

Connection
It is difficult to always balance the interests of various groups. In this case, it is Rosemont Copper versus the residents of the area. Given the economical benefits that Rosemont Copper can bring, it is also important to evaluate its detriments, such as posing as a environmental risk to the area. In this case, the presence of regulation agency, E.P.A can help set guidelines for which the company must meet to minimize its environmental impacts if the Rosement Copper's mining operation were to be approved.

Reflection
In the conflict between environmental safety and economic gain, economic gain almost always wins. For example, while carbon dioxide has been supported through extensive scientific research to cause global warming, fossil fuels are still being consumed. Another case involves the decision to exploit the Arctics despite risk of environmental degradation in search of fossil fuels. Thus, I predict that the Rosemont Copper mining operation will eventually win over the complaints of the residents.

Foreign policy

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/18/world/asia/gulf-widens-between-us-and-an-increasingly-hostile-karzai.html?scp=38&sq=us%20foreign%20policy&st=cse
Summary

In response to the recent burning of the Koran by an American unit at Bolgrom Airbase and the murder of seventeen Afghan civilians, President Karzai of Afghanistan has released statements condemning U.S as a “demon” and its acts “satanic”. However, many view that Karzai’s condemnations are primarily aimed to gain support from Afghanis rather than admonish U.S. While the recent events have strained U.S.-Afghanistan’s positive relationships, the U.S doesn’t believe that they will destroy their relationships as President Karzai relies upon American aid to sustain his power as well as Afghan stability.

Connection
U.S employs multiple ways of implementing foreign policy - economically, military, diplomacy. In the case of Afghanistan, all three are implemented, with U.S military and economic aid and diplomatic dialogues. Nevertheless, discontent with American presence in Afghanistan is palpable, as President Karzai demonstrates through his increasingly more bold tirades.

Reflection
American military presence in the Middle East inciting discontent is old news. With an already short-tempered population, any U.S missteps can cause uproars resulting in violence and more deaths. Thus, President Karzai's condemnation of U.S is unsurprising, perhaps even mild, compared to the reaction of the public toward the slaughter of their fellow countrymen. However, U.S should not be discouraged by the public reaction and withdraw troops abruptly, as without U.S protection, Karzai will most likely loose power to other contenders, such as the Taliban.

Elections/campaigns

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/santorum-says-voters-might-as-well-re-elect-obama-because-romney-offers-little-difference/2012/03/22/gIQAP8ISUS_story.html
Summary
Recently, Republican G.O.P contender, Rick Santorum made a misstep, announcing that that he'd rather have Obama win over Romney since both share similar viewpoints. He is now finding himself explaining for his error, insisting that he'll support the G.O.P, whoever it may end up being. This is not the first mistake Santorum has made recently, as he also previously stated that he has more important issues now than the national economy. As the Republican party are experiencing intra-party warfare between the candidates, Obama has taken the momentum in Louisiana, highlighting the Trayvon Martin shooting that has instigated criticism.

Connection
The “feeding frenzy” of the media is at it again, dissecting every action and enlarging the blunders of the presidential candidates. The internal division created through the “mud-slinging” of the Republican contestants have been made it the focus in media as well, creating the perfect slew of entertainment, at the cost of lost popularity, both within the Republican party and with the Republican supporters, for Santorum.

Reflection
Even though Santorum has attempted to rectify what he really “meant”, he will be unable to catch up with Romney at this point. With Romney's overwhelming lead in vote, whatever attack Santorum fires at Romney has no hope of reversing the race now. However, the attacks that Santorum directs at Romney will definitely have adverse effects on the party, and most likely, will send Obama the votes that had the potential of going to the Republican candidate.

Political parties

http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/house-centerpiece-jobs-bill-becomes-gop-headache-thanks-in-part-to-tea-party-conservatives/2012/03/23/gIQA7jYFVS_story.html
Summary:
The Republican dominated House, lead by Speaker, John Boehner and Democratic dominated Senate, led by Harry Reid have met yet another impasse. The Republican party, despite for being the original proposer for the transportation bill, have been met with a problem that will lead to a shutdown if the problem is not resolved by March 31st, when the authority to draw from funds to support road construction ends. While Boehner is trying to recruit representatives to support the funding, Tea-Party members, advocates of giving states the power of funding transportation have opposed. However, Boehner is also reluctant to take the bill passed by the Senate for $101 billion funding. If the current situation were to be unresolved, then millions employed in the road-construction business will be unemployed.

Connection
Impasse, or gridlock, occurs frequently when partisan divisions prevent problems from being resolved. The Republican's internal divisions, between the more radical Tea-Party members and moderates, are causing the program proposed to increase employment into a program that must eventually result in unemployment, if the funding for road construction is not extended. A similar occurrence occurred during 2011, when the government almost underwent lock-down due to the inability to reach a compromise when the debt ceiling was met.

Reflection
If the Republican Party is unable to reach a solution within the Senate with come to a compromise with the Senate, then it will jeopardize not only its public image but also votes. As seen in the presidential race, the attacks exchanged by the candidates has already decreased their popular support. If the bipartisan agenda of the Republican Party leads to the stagnation in road-construction nation-wide, resulting in unemployment of millions employed in the transportation services, then the party image will definitely suffer.

Campaign Finance

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/19/obama-raised-45-million-for-re-election-in-february/?scp=4&sq=obama%20campaign%20finance&st=cse

Summary
In Febuary, Obama's fundraising campaign announced that Obama raised over $45 in that month alone which is a great increase compared to the $29.1 million he has raised in January. In comparison, Republican G.O.P candidates, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, raised only $11.5 and $9 million, respectively. Though it appears that Romney and Santorum are greatly behind Obama, one of the reasons accounting for this is due to the fact that Obama is raising funds for both his primary election as well as general elections, whereas the two Republican candidates are raising money only for the primary.

Connection
Building the war chest is perhaps the most important task for a presidential candidate. Without sufficient funding, not matter how brilliant the candidate's plans are, he would be unable to gain support because every part of the campaigning process, from marketing to electioneering, requires money. In the recent past, the forced drop-out of many Republican G.O.P contestants can testify to the importance of having a expendable campaign fund.

Reflection
Obama's incredible ability at raising money is one of the main reasons for his success in 2008. His ads were ubiquitous, and thus, helped him gain facial recognition. Though the general elections have yet to start, Obama's continued prowess in raising funds is a good indicator of his possible success. If the Republican nominee is unable to match Obama's ability in gaining money, then he will lose at the starting line.

Social security

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/paul-ryan-budget-proposal-sparks-criticism-from-both-democrats-gop/2012/03/21/gIQA4yjTSS_story.html

Summary

Proposed by Paul Ryan, the Republican House Budget has elicited many critisms from both Republicans and Democrats. The Budget Proposal is ambitious in its goals - eliminating governmental deficit by 2040. However, the means of attaining its goal, is not through both income tax increases and spending cuts but only spending cuts. Ryan proposes to resolve the federal deficit problem primarily through cutting costly entitlement programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Pell Grant, income-tax returns, food-stamps, and Medicaid. But other programs, such as defense spending, science programs, educational funds are also on the chopping block.

Connection
Whenever cuts in Social Security or Medicare occur, there will likely be a response from the retirees, whose welfare is dependent upon the funding of the programs. While Ryan's proposal, consisting of enormous budget cuts and no income tax increases to balance the federal budget, seems characteristic of Republican fiscal policy, he is ignoring the fact that the success of the party is dependent upon the electorates. In this case, by proposing to cut Social Security and Medicare funds, Ryan risks alienating the senior support for the Republican party.

Reflection
It is unsurprising that Ryan's aggressive proposal would face criticism from even his Republican peers. If his policy were to be implemented, the consequences would be outrageous, not only alienating senior voters, but also students, parents, the lower class, the middle class, and military personnel – essentially, all that's left is the wealthy class, and considering the population of the wealthy class, the Republican party's likelihood of gaining office would be low.

Federal budget

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/17/education/budget-cuts-threaten-access-to-college-placement-tests.html?scp=7&sq=federal%20budget&st=cse

Summary
Due to a recent federal budget cut, students around the nation planning to take Advanced Placement examinations will have to suffer. A dramatic decrease from the $43 million allotted to subsidize honors programs in the previous year, the $27 million set aside this year will make it harder for low-income students to take as many exams as they'd like. Complaints are heard from students, whose family will not provide the funds for them to take the AP tests and schools, who are struggling to absorb the fees themselves with an already reduced budget.

Connection
The Democratic Party has always been known for opposing budget cuts. Thus, it is surprising as to why the Obama administration would be cutting the federal subsidy for the A.P programs, especially with the general elections coming up. Being constituted of many highly-educated voter, education will unquestionably be a priority for many Democratic voters and thus, the budget cut in the educational sector is surprising.

Reflection
While I believe that the budget cut was likely a response to public disapproval of the ever-increasing federal deficit, helping Obama gear up for the general election, I am nevertheless, disappointed. I am disappointed to learn that the democratic system involves such trade-offs between votes and the quality of education. Furthermore, as audience of Obama's State of the Union speech, I am disapointed to learn that the promised improvements to be made education have yet to be realized – the budget cut from the A.P funding only serves to detract from the rigor of American education.

Health Care

Health Care

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/19/health-care-debate-returns-with-intensity/?scp=1&sq=Health%20Care%20Debate%20Returns%20With%20Intensity&st=cse

Summary
As the governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney was responsible for the adoption of the state health care programs that required state residents to purchase health care. His act has targeted by his fellow opponents, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich as being the underlying blueprint for Obamacare. With the Supreme Court hearing on the constitutionality of a federal health care on March 26th, the similarity between Romney’s health care and Obamacare is bring brought up again as other Republican presidential candidates use it to criticize Romney. Though Romney has tried to deflect criticisms by distinguishing the Massachusetts health care from Obamacare and explicitlytating that he will repeal Obamacare, crcriticismstill follow.

Connection
The Supreme Court ruling on the constitutionality of government mandated healthcare will likely determine the fate of Obamacare. However, debate between both parties over the healthcare will most likely persist and possibly revive in later years. Supreme Court rulings, while are upheld by law, rarely go unchallenged. For instance, decades after the ruling that abortion is legal as it is a privacy right through Roe v. Wade, the Republican party is still touting anti-abortion agenda.

Reflection
Romney's similarity with Obama with respect to healthcare and other measures will most likely be used by other Republican candidates as fuel for attacks. Until now, Romney's popularity has won him the number one position among the Republican candidates. However, it'd be interesting to find out whether his similarities with Obama will be an advantage in the general elections, winning him votes from moderates, or an disadvantage, causing him to lose votes from Republicans.

Taxes

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/17/opinion/a-republican-talks-sense-on-taxes.html?scp=5&sq=taxes&st=cse

Summary:
Diverting from the Republican norm of proposing tax cuts for the wealthy, Republican Representative Rick Crawford from Arkansas has instead, proposed a tax increase. Crawford has expressed his opinion that to reduce the federal deficit, not only should federal spending be cut but revenue tax should also increase for those with annual income over one million. Though his action might be primarily targeted to win votes as he faces stark competition from Democrats, he was condemned by Grover Norquist, a fellow Republican, who claimes that he betrayed the no-new-tax pledge. So far, Crawford is the only Republican who has supported tax increase for the rich.

Connection
The Republican party is associated with being a proponent of spending within budget but only at the cost of spending cuts rather than through tax increases. Moreover, many Republicans, such as the former Republican G.O.P candidate, Herman Cain has favored a flat-tax system, advocating the same tax rate for all or more extremely, regressive tax system, favoring lower tax for the rich and more tax for the middle to low income classes. Crawford's act of proposing a progressive tax rate, a tax increase on the rich, is uncharacteristic of a Republican and was probably the reason for the criticisms.

Reflection
It is regretful that politicians are judged more based upon their party loyalty by their peers rather than the merit of their proposals. If the fiscal policy was strictly Republican, then the middle and low class would suffer from massive entitlement program cuts and taxes while the rich profit from tax breaks. If the fiscal policy was strictly Democratic, then the federal deficit will forever increase, due to the extravagant government expenditures. Crawford's plan of combining elements from both party strategies seem feasible, yet unfortunately, it will probably never be enacted due to oppositions within his party.

Gun Control

Savage, Charlie. "Rules Eased on Gun Sales to Noncitizens." New York Times. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Jan 2012. .

Summary:

Gun regulations aimed at Non-citizens by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tabacco, Firearms, and Explosives will become relaxed as the Supreme Court ruled that there was no legal basis for these instructions. The removal of this restriction will allow non-citizens to own guns as long as they can document that they have stayed in a state for over 90 days. This rule does not apply to citizens.

Connection:

With the increase in numbers of illegal immigrants, and non-citizens, cases involving their rights have increased lately. From voting to gun ownership, non-citizens are gradually gaining their rights .

Reflection:
Whether this removal of regulation is for better or for worse is hard to tell. Given the recent incident involving a student being shot to death for having a replica gun and a woman shooting an intruder, gun regulation has rose to the limelight lately. By reducing restrictions for non-citizens, it makes non-citizens more able the same rights as citizens. However, it also raises fear about raising crime rates that will probably result as more gain access to guns.

Summary:

Obama presented a brief speech to E.P.A employees addressing them for their efforts in the improvement of truck efficiency, reduction of toxic emissions and the clean up of many rivers and water bodies. However, the President was careful to not address his recent moves that have restrained the EPA-suspending the EPA's actions to increase smog and carbon dioxide regulations.

Connection:
The Democrats are known to be advocates of environmental safety standards and their support for the EPA. President Obama's actions definitely aligned him favorably with environmentalists however, his more conservative actions probably were strategic with the 2012 in mind.

Reflection:

The majority of Republican candidates have demonstrated of their extreme views toward the environment. From denouncing climate change to declaring that the EPA will be removed, the Republican candidates are definitely alienating potential Democrat support. This will only work in Obama's interest.

Foreign Policy

Sherman, Paul. "Paul’s Stance on Foreign Policy Divides Many Traditional G.O.P. Voters." New York Times. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Jan 2012.http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/30/us/politics/pauls-foreign-policy-stance-divides-many-gop-voters.html?scp=2&sq=foreign policy&st=cse

Summary:
Representative Ron Paul has been know for his more conservative policies. However, his foreign policy seems to diverge from his standard policies as he takes the approach of removing the possibility of striking Iran as means of protection. His non-interventionist plan has reduced his support, as many loyal Republicans are more favorable to interventionist foreign policy especially when deadline with Iran.

Connection:
Ron Paul has lead in second in the past few weeks. His policies are generally Republican, however, taken to the extreme conservative side. For instance, he supports removing income tax and the IRS. In addition, he also signed a Pro-Life, anti-abortion pledge, stating that he was anti-abortion no matter what the circumstances are.

Reflection:
It is unsurprising for Ron Paul's popularity because he is the representation of the Republican policy agenda. However, his extreme views will definitely eliminate him from becoming a president because he will not have the votes of moderates.

Elections/Campaigns

Sherman, Paul. "Let the Non-citizens Vote." New York Times. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Jan 2012.http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/04/opinion/let-noncitizens-contribute-to-us-elections.html?scp=2&sq=elections&st=cse

Summary:

In Bluman v FEC, the Supreme Court will be hearing the first federal law that will challenge the past norm-not allowing non-citizens to vote. The plaintiff, Bluman was charged for the distribution of pamplets advocating for the presidency of President Obama. This case will seek to overturn the first amendment.

Connection:
Citizenship being the requisite for voting has long been established in America. However, in recent years, as illegal immigration has increased, it has let to questions about representation.

Reflection:

If this bill succeeds in passing, it will completely change election results. With the Hispanic populations upsurge in recent years, if this bill allows them to vote, then they will place great pressure on the Republican candidates who have been seeking to raise fences on the Mexican border.

Political Parties

Rosenthal, Andrew. "The Faux Insurgent Versus the Faux Conservative." New York Times. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Jan 2012. http://loyalopposition.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/11/the-faux-insurgent-versus-the-faux-conservative/?scp=4&sq=republican party&st=cse.

Summary:

In the recent Republican's bid in the caucus, plenty of mudslinging is to be seen. Newt Gringrich, a candidate that is running low on support in recent caucus have released a commercial directed at Mitt Romney. Not only is Romney portrayed as Pro-abortion, but also a moderate and a extremists.

Connection:
Mitt Romney has been in the lead lately in a couple of caucuses. In order to damage his image, his competitors will risk everything to denounce him. However, by doing so hurts the overall image of the Republican party which will be favorable for Obama.

Reflection:
Mitt Romney has expressed that he was prepared for name-calling from other competitors. However, he also points out that by doing so, they will only damage the party's name. As competiton between the G.O.P candidates intensifies in the upcoming weeks, Romney should embrace him for more.

Social Security

John, Calme. "Disagreement Over Payroll Tax Cut’s Impact on Social Security." New York Times. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Jan 2012.

Summary:
President Obama's decision to extend a payroll tax break affecting more than 160 million workers and employers have been speculated by many from primarily the Republican party. Social Security is directly influenced by the payroll tax cut because payroll taxes fund the majority of it. Many worry that the payroll tax break, which should end on December 31st will be extended, and if that occurs, then Social Security funding will be jeopardized.

Connection:
The President's decision to extend the payroll tax is understandable as one of his priorities right now as an incumbent is to boost the economy. If this does indeed improves the job economy, then perhaps his chances of reelection will be higher. However, by doing so, he is also jeopardizing the votes the millions of senior citizens who rely on Social Security.

Reflection:
It is ironic that while one of the Republican Party policies is aimed to reduce social benefits such as Social Security, they would criticize a plan that would potentially decrease it. I think this demonstrates of true bipartisanship-an eagerness to criticize regardless of how the party agenda is aligned with the policy.

Federal Budget

Applebaum, Binyaman. "A Shrinking Military Budget May Take Neighbors With It." New York Times. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Jan 2012.http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/07/us/a-hidden-cost-of-military-cuts-could-be-invention-and-its-industries.html
Summary:
News of budget cuts within the military have been released. The budget cut will primarily be cut from the research and development sector of the military. At 80 billion dollars, it will cut more than ten percent of the military's spending. Many see this cut as having negative impacts on the economy because it will reduce technological innovation for which the military is know for. .

Connection:
The Democratic party has long been adverse to increasing military spending. By cutting funding for the military, not only will it reduce strains on the already high debt but also reduce unnecessary spending. However, with election looming ahead, how long this cut will last is not known.

Reflection:
The military's R&D department contributes to many scientific advancements. Thus, while I think it may be necessary to balance budgets, I wish the cut had been to another component of the military-one that does not bring as many technological benefits,

Economy

"Health Care Law Will Let States Tailor Benefits." New York Times. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Jan 2012. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/06/business/us-manufacturing-is-a-bright-spot-for-the-economy.html?scp=5&sq=economy&st=cse

Summary:
While consumer do not see much of “Made in USA” in stores, US is actually ranked number two in the world for manufacturing. However, due to the relative inexpensiveness of manufacturing in Asian countries, U.S has been forced to occupy manufacturing of higher value products not as commonly seen. For example, US produces machinery, chemicals and transportation equipments. The past year is the first time since 1997 since manufacturing industries have witnessed a rise.

Connection:
President Obama has currently seen a rise in approval rating for the improving economy. The rise in manufacturing will look favorable for Obama as an incumbent compared to inexperienced Republican candidates who at the moment at attacking each other.

Reflection:
The domestic economy has been rose to become the priority for most American who have survived the recession. Because the economy has improved during the Obama administration, it will add to Obama's merits, showing that he is capable.

Health Care

Pear, Robert. "Health Care Law Will Let States Tailor Benefits." New York Times. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Jan 2012. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/17/health/policy/health-care-law-to-allow-states-to-pick-benefits.html?scp=7&sq=health%20care&st=cse

Summary:
The Obama administration recently released that they were changing the health care law to allow states to determine the benefits. This change will make the health care law similar to Medicaid, in which the states set the benefits to meet federal standards. The new flexibility would deflect many critisms of the Republican party which has at numerous times pointed out that the flaws in a uniform law.

Connection:
Obama has persisted in passing the health care reform which has been in his policy for years. However, due to a Congress of dominantly Republican congressmen, this health care law has yet to be approved. In addition, this health care reform must await for the Supreme Court decision to determine whether the requirement of buying health insurance can be mandated by government.

Reflection:
Obama has seen a brief rise in approval rating due to the improving economy. However, his popularity, compared to incumbents in the past, is still low. If the health care reform is passed by the Supreme Court, Obama's chances of reelection will be significantly higher.

Taxes

Bartlett, Bruce.
"Cutting the Corporate Tax Rate Is No Economic Panacea."
New York Times. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Jan 2012.
Summary:
Many
Republican candidates have increasing turned to cutting corporate
taxes as the solution to a better economy. However, that solution
will only benefit a small number of corporations because most
businesses do not pay taxes as high as that of corporates. A study
has shown that only twenty-five percent of the leading corporations
have to pay the tax rate of 35%. Thus, corporate tax cuts will
benefit few wealthy companies while not having much impact on the
overall economy.

Connection:
The
Republican candidates similar responses about cutting income taxes,
corporate taxes, and regulations on industries comply with the
Republican party platform. However, they do not consider that
cutting corporate taxes will only benefits the biggest and most
wealthy corporations that already have surpluses in profits and not
the overall economy.

Reflection:
With
the worldwide “Occupy Wall Street” movement, it is surprising to
see the Republican candidates adherence to the party platform which
seems like it will work against their favor. Corporate tax cuts will
benefit many wall street companies, thus, wouldn't it cause greater
rage amongst protesters?
